Death Avenue

The High Line was built in the 1930s, as part of a massive public-private infrastructure project called the West Side Improvement. It lifted freight traffic 30 feet in the air, removing dangerous trains from the streets of Manhattan's largest industrial district. So many accidents occurred between freight trains and street-level traffic that 10th Avenue became known as Death Avenue. No trains have run on the High Line since 1980.

Mustard Not Preferred

Due to regional preferences, you will never find mustard on a hamburger in NYC--this includes Mickey D's and BK, 2 places I assumed would carry over the tradition.

Sticker Shock

In 2008, the Big Apple became the first city in the country to implement a law forcing chain restaurants to post the calorie count of each food in the same size and font as the price.

Putting the brakes on thoughtlessly inhaling calories is exactly the effect New York City health officials hoped the law would have. They say calorie labels could reduce the number of obese New Yorkers by 150,000 over the next five years, and prevent 30,000 cases of diabetes.

The law applies to all chain restaurants with 15 or more outlets nationwide.

Seattle and some California cities are also on board.

Crosstown Upchuck

M23 headed to the Chelsea Piers.

Incessant coughing leads to vomiting.

Luckily, I moved before it wound up on the back of my neck.

The Garden State

Via Port Authority Bus Terminal, which is exactly like an airport...but with buses.

The returning view of NYC skyline--boats filled the Hudson in anticipation of the Macy's fireworks show--was worth the $13.50 in round trip fare. Not to mention a day of barbecuing, badminton and beer.

I Was Five Years Old...

...when mob boss John Gotti ordered the hits on Castellano and Bilotti in front of Sparks Steak House.

At 29, I'm eating there on Friday night--enjoying a filet, hash brown potatoes and 2 of the best cosmos I've ever had.

Cosmo's at The Plaza

It's just something you have boast about, although the drinks themselves were average at best.
